OUR STORY
The origin and idea of Amelia Promise was to take underutilized assets, be it legacy farmland or stranded urban assets and convert them into revenue producing assets needed for the 21st century economy.
Beginning in 1906 the Great Grand Father of a Drexel University African American woman named Karen Lopez, who was the first of her family to attend college and graduated with honors from Drexel University, purchased farmland in Amelia County, VA. She was the great granddaughter of Emmitt W. Jones Sr. During every summer visit, her mother, Emmitt’s granddaughter, was encouraged by him to plan for her future and consider moving from New Jersey down to the Family Farm in VA. Emmit W. Jones Sr. always said that “the land is the Promise of the future.”
The land was later heired to Amelia’s mother who considered selling it. However, the family knew Emmitt Jones Sr., would not approve of our selling his land. Therefore, she willed it to her daughter, Karen. After many years of trying to manage the property and all that went with it, Karen and her mother became exhausted. They prayed for better options that would empower their family to benefit from the “Jones Land”.
Soon after Karen passed unexpectedly and unfortunately, upon her passing, her son sold the land. As a tribute to Karen and her family and to preserve their family legacy, Amelia Promise, Inc. a 501c3 was formed.
